Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Classes in Orlando

Maureen has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga since 2004 and started teaching Mysore method Ashtanga in 2008 after her first trip to Mysore, India.

Mysore Ashtanga is taught to all levels of students. Maureen guides each student through one posture at a time. Over time, the students begin to memorize the sequence of postures (asanas) as they become more independent in their personal practice. This allows students to take their time with more difficult asanas and ask questions or for assistance when needed. This traditional method of teaching yoga is meant for the individual so that each student can learn yoga properly, at their own pace, and physical level. This is an excellent practice for beginners because you don't have to keep up with the rest of the class, and the teacher keeps a watchful eye on you so you know exactly what to do and how to do it.

In large group led classes, beginners can often feel overwhelmed by the postures, breathing, and level of others in the class. It's easy to get distracted by comparing yourself to others when taking a group led class. With the Mysore method, students can ask questions during class, and rest when needed. Once the student has completed the poses prescribed by the teacher, they are done for the day. Most students take about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete their daily practice, and leave when they are finished.

Whether you are a beginner or have been practicing yoga for some time, this method will help you not only deepen your practice, but help you to learn traditional yoga techniques through repetition, proper breathing while performing asanas, as well as correct alignment, and drishti (gazing points).

All students must arrive by 6:15 for the opening mantra and the beginning of class. Advanced students may begin their practice at 6am.
