Ginseng Shibao Tea (often translated as "Ginseng Eighteen Treasures Tea") is a heavy-hitter in the world of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The "Eighteen Treasures" refers to the eighteen different herbal ingredients blended together to create a potent "vitality tonic."

It’s essentially a high-powered energy and recovery tea for anyone dealing with burnout or fatigue.

The "Eighteen Treasures" Ingredients

While brands vary slightly, the core of this tea usually includes:

  • Ginseng & Maca: The primary "adaptogens" for energy and hormonal balance.
  • Goji Berries & Red Dates: For blood health and natural sweetness.
  • Mulberry & Polygonatum (Huang Jing): Traditionally used to nourish the kidneys and "Yin."
  • Cinnamon & Clove: Warming herbs that improve circulation.

Key Benefits

  • Adaptogenic Energy: Unlike the "spike and crash" of caffeine, the ginseng and maca work to help your body adapt to stress and improve physical and mental stamina over time.
  • Kidney & Vitality Support: In TCM, the "Kidneys" are the seat of your life-force energy. This tea is specifically designed to "tonify" the kidneys, which practitioners believe helps with libido, lower back strength, and reproductive health.
  • Recovery from Burnout: It’s excellent for those who work long hours, experience "brain fog," or feel chronically cold and depleted.
  • Immune Defense: The high concentration of antioxidants from the berries and dates helps fortify the immune system against seasonal bugs.

How to Brew & Drink

Since this tea contains roots (Ginseng, Maca) and dried fruits, it requires a "harder" brew than delicate green leaves.

  1. Water Temp: Use boiling water (212°F / 100°C). You need the high heat to break down the dense roots.
  2. The Steep: Let it sit for at least 10–15 minutes. Because there are so many ingredients, it takes time for the water to penetrate the "treasures."
  3. The Second Steep: Don't throw the bag away! This tea is famous for being better on the second or third steep. Just add more boiling water and let it sit a bit longer each time.
  4. The "Garnish": Many people like to tear open the bag after the final steep and eat the softened goji berries and red dates.

Timing & Daily Intake

  • Best Time: Drink this in the morning or early afternoon. Because ginseng is a natural stimulant, drinking it after 6:00 PM might make it hard to fall asleep.
  • Daily Limit: 1 bag per day is usually plenty. It is a potent formula, and "more" isn't necessarily better.

A Quick "Peer" Word of Caution

Ginseng is powerful. If you have high blood pressure, are on blood thinners, or are currently dealing with a fever/flu, you might want to skip this tea until you’re feeling balanced. Ginseng is very "warming" and "moving," so it can sometimes exacerbate "heat" conditions like high blood pressure or active infections.
